The Self | Turkish Hammams: Decoding this Ancient Bathing Ritual with Peninsula Istanbul

— Written primarily based on exclusive insights from Irem Aldemir, Director of Spa, Peninsula Istanbul

Originating from the ancient practice of communal bathing, Turkish Hammams have evolved into sanctuaries of rejuvenation, blending historical significance with modern therapeutic benefits and more advancements. In this exclusive interview with Peninsula Istanbul's Director of Spa, Irem Aldemir, we get into the sheer essence of Turkish Hammams, uncovering their historical roots, authentic ambience, health benefits, modern adaptations, etiquette, and insider tips for first-time visitors.

PL: Please share an overview of the historical and cultural significance of Turkish Hammam.

Irem Aldemir: Hammams; meaning "bathing houses", are actually common in different parts of the world. Comprehensibly, in the past, practical bathing opportunities were unavailable, and taking a bath was a special occasion. Taking a bath with others looks strange to us today, but it was the practice back then. People would ask their friends if they would like to join their plan to visit a hammam. Political, commercial and many other issues of daily life must have been discussed in hammams.

Architecturally, a hammam is a stand-alone building, with an interior covered with marble to facilitate hygiene. This creates a fascinating ambience and reminds its visitors that well-being is visual too.

The fire burning under the building wanders through canals beneath, heating the place and water. It may have been built for charity purposes, to serve a particular group, or to fund other public facilities such as libraries or soup kitchens. To consecrate a hammam must be a great way to keep one's name and fame alive, considering that in Istanbul, most of the currently operating traditional hammams are almost 500 years old.

PL: What are some key elements that contribute to the authentic ambience of a Turkish Hammam?

Irem Aldemir: Definitely a lot of white marble and the smell of pure white soap, which turns most of the visitor’s experience into not only a physical but mental cleansing ritual. Many craftsmanship, especially on copper bowls. Beautiful colours and patterns on thin, easy-to-dry hammam towels, called peshtemals.

PL: What are some health and wellness benefits of Turkish Hammam treatments?

Irem Aldemir: While the warmth of the hammam supports detoxification, the massage adjusts blood circulation, and it is considered to be good for muscle and cramp pain. On the other hand, exfoliation of the dead skin feels as smooth as silk and enables the products applied afterwards to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin. Therefore, it could be recommended as a lead treatment to cellulite treatments.

PL: Are there any modern adaptations or innovations that have been incorporated into the traditional Hammam experience?

Irem Aldemir: For sure, for instance here in The Peninsula Istanbul, we took hammam treatment up a notch thanks to our collaboration with our partner Subtle Energies. This Australian-origin natural skincare brand is founded on Ayurveda principles. Their products include only rare, pure and quality active ingredients, produced and blended with Ayurveda wisdom and modern techniques. Along with Turkish Hammam handicraft, this treatment, named Serene Hammam, enfolding the knowledge of cultures, starts with traditional exfoliation and continues with aloe vera body mask application to soothe and deeply replenish the skin's moisture. This anti-oxidant treatment leaving the body texture revitalized is definitely one of the favorites of our guests.

PL: Can you share any tips or recommendations for first-time visitors to Turkish Hammams, including cultural etiquette and preparation for the experience?

Irem Aldemir: If they prefer a local traditional hammam, they will be with other visitors, yet in different sections for women and men. In case they prefer a hammam in a hotel's spa, they will receive the treatment privately and could have also a couple of treatments as per their request. Additionally, in a hotel, they would have the opportunity to benefit all day long from other facilities such as a steam room and sauna. I would obviously recommend the utilization of warm facilities for a worthwhile hammam treatment experience. Whether at a local traditional hammam or at a hotel spa their dressing preferences will be respected and peshtemal towels to cover themselves or any other amenities needed will be provided.

PL: What are some of the signature treatments or rituals offered in Turkish Hammams that guests should not miss out on, and what makes them so special?

Irem Aldemir: The primary hammam treatment which should one experience while in Turkey is the scrubbing and the foam massage offered afterwards. Besides, regarding an experience which you can't book up, don't miss if you are ever invited to a bride or groom's hammam. It is a traditional bachelorette party happening in a hammam where one getting married and his or her beloved friends and family are getting prepared by pampering treatments and food served. Nowadays those parties are not only taking place in traditional hammams, but also in luxury hotel hammams.
